More Than 100 Tourist Guides in Europe Now Have T-Guide Accreditation!

More than 100 professional tourist guides in Europe have been accredited by FEG and ENAT as qualified "T-Guides", who are trained to guide persons with learning difficulties at heritage sites and in museums.

Since the course was launched in 2016, 101 tourist guides from 14 countries have received a certificate from the specialist Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme offered by FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations and ENAT.

The T-Guide course aims to equip tourist guides with the knowledge, skills and competences to ensure a pleasant and rewarding experience for visitors who may not otherwise get the chance to visit museums and other heritage sites.

T-Guides are trained to guide visitors who may be neurodiverse, have early-stage dementia, learning difficuties, Downs syndrome or other conditions that require particular consideration when organising and carrying out guided tours.

Training includes an e-Learning course, self-study, two days of face-to-face instruction/workshops and a practical exercise - organising, carrying out and documenting a guided tour with a group of visitors, including persons in the target group(s) and their friends or carers.

T-Guide Shortlisted For the Zero Project Awards 2020

The T-Guide training course for professional Tourist Guides was shortlisted for the prestigious Zero Project Awards 2020. This year's awards are given for projects addressing the topic of Education for people with disabilities. From an incredible 469 nominations, 169 Practices and 24 Policies have made it through to the Shortlist. All shortlisted projects will be invited to attend the Zero Project Conference 2020 at the United Nations Offices in Vienna, Austria.

Inclusive Tourist Guiding - Handbook by the ELEVATOR project

This Handbook provides a handbook with learning material focused on Inclusive Tourist Guiding. Its creation was initiated by tourist guides, who meet tourists with access needs more and more often in their work, as their number is growing mainly due to the ageing population.

Training offers on this topic are weak or completely absent in most countries.

Inclusive (or also accessible) guiding is based on the concept of Accessible Tourism, that endeavours to improve tourist destinations, products and services so that they are accessible to all people regardless of their age, abilities, permanent or temporary limitations and impairments.

End-users: Training providers, curriculum designers, professional tourist guides, policy makers (primarily in education and vocational training).

About T-Guide Certification

The T-GUIDE course and certification is the outcome of an EU funded Leonardo project to develop a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course for qualified tourist guides who want to work with visitors with learning difficulties. Its goal is to enhance guides’ skill sets to enable them to work competently and sensitively with these visitors.

Visitors with learning difficulties may be part of a group or be accompanied by family members, friends, a personal assistant of carer. Some may also travel alone. They can include persons with age-related conditions such as dementia or they may have difficulties in orientation or concentration. Some visitors may have autism or neuro-divergent conditions that affect their communication or social awareness. Visitors may also have multiple disabilities, such as hearing or visual impairments, or walking difficulties or long-termn health conditions.

T-Guides are trained to guide visitors with these and other conditions, aiming to offer meaningful and stimulating experiences to all visitors, according to their specific needs.

T-GUIDE courses and certification are offered jointly by the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (FEG) and the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT).

To achieve the certificate tourist guides must:

Complete a set of online learning modules
Pass a written assessment requiring consolidation of the knowledge gained
Attend a one or two-day interactive course*
Within 6 months of the interactive course, set up and conduct a tour to FEG-ENAT standards with a group of people with learning difficulties and provide a portfolio of evidence of the group tour.

* Qualified tourist guides who have successfully completed a certified EN15565:2008 compliant tourist guide training course attend one full day of interactive, face-to-face training on T-GUIDE. Others attend an additional full day interactive, face-to-face training on guiding skills and guiding people with specific access needs prior to their T-GUIDE training day.

The intensive two-day course involves practicing the use of Easy To Understand Language (ETUL), and improving understanding of functional and social aspects of disabilities. It also informs participants about relevant national and EU legislation. Participants engage in exercises on shared understanding of learning difficulties and learn how to develop Access Statements and accessible/inclusive tourism through Universal Design. The course encourages refinements to communication techniques and tour planning skills.

The first T-GUIDES were certified in 2016. The list continues to grow. The qualified tourist guides listed below have successfully completed all four stages of the course and are certified T-GUIDES by FEG and ENAT.

T-GuIDE is an initiative of nine organisations supported by the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme, ”Leonardo Da Vinci” in the period December 2012 to April 2015.

The initiative addresses two of today’s major societal challenges in Europe: to increase opportunities in the job market and to increase social inclusion.

The aim was to produce an EU training model and Manual for training Tourist Guides in guiding people who have learning difficulties or other intellectual impairments.

T-GuIDE eLearning Course

The T-GuIDE eLearning course was launched in March 2015. It is available at www.accesstraining.eu

Anyone can take the course and it is free of charge. It provides a general introduction to some of the basic principles that tourist guides should observe when preparing a guided tour for persons with intellectual impairments or learning difficulties. It also introduces examples of good practice, using multi-media sources and presents useful references for further study. After the main modules there are short quizzes allowing learners to test their knowledge.

It should be emphasised that the T-GuIDE eLearning course does not qualify a learner to work as a specialised tourist guide. This requires professional training as a tourist guide and an additional special training course. The T-GuIDE Training Course will be offered to qualified tourist guides by the T-GuIDE partner, FEG, starting in 2016.

ENAT, the European Network for Accessible Tourism and FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, have signed a Partnership Agreement, aiming to improve the skills of professional tourist guides, who guide visitors with disabilities.

ENAT and FEG worked closely together as partners over the past three years with a number of European organisations, developing the “T-Guide” project, which aims to deliver continuous professional development for tourist guides across Europe for “Guiding people with intellectual disabilities and/or learning difficulties”. The project was co-financed by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme and completed in the summer of 2015.

Under their new partnership agreement, FEG and ENAT will work closely together on several areas of common interest. Their first initiative will be to establish a supplementary training course for professional qualified tourist guides, focusing on skills and techniques that are needed when guiding people with learning difficulties or intellectual disabilities.

Signing the new agreement at a meeting in Athens, Greece, FEG President Ms. Efi Kalampoukidou stated:

“FEG’s member associations, representing 70,000 qualified tourist guides in Europe, are continually striving to ensure the highest quality of tourist guiding for visitors from all countries and backgrounds. We need to develop Tourism for All in Europe and in our own countries as destinations”.

She went on to say: “In our profession, Continuous Professional Development is a must. We have to adapt to the changing demands of groups or individual visitors, as well as keeping up to date with the latest knowledge and refining our guiding skills. By partnering with ENAT we will be able to deliver a world class life-long training to tourist guides in disability awareness and tourist guiding”.

Welcoming the agreement, Mr. Ivor Ambrose, ENAT’s Managing Director, remarked: “Nowadays, tourists of all ages and abilities are looking for inclusive experiences. Tour groups are often mixed and are very likely to include visitors with various disabilities or access needs and tourist guides must know how to prepare and cope with the different needs they may encounter. We are pleased to support FEG in rolling out training courses that can help tourist guides meet the demands of visitors with disabilities. The qualified tourist guides who have these skills will be an asset to destinations and attractions of a country or city that are looking to offer a better, more inclusive welcome to their guests and this, in turn, will make European tourism more attractive and competitive”.

Working with ENAT, FEG plans to offer the first “T-Guide” training course for its London Blue Badge tourist guides in March 2016, in the Houses of Parliament in London, UK.

T-GUIDE eLearning Course

The T-GUIDE eLearning course was launched in March 2015. It is available at AccessTraining.eu/t-guide

The eLearning course is free of charge. It provides a general introduction to some of the basic principles that tourist guides should observe when preparing a guided tour for persons with intellectual impairments or learning difficulties. It also introduces examples of good practice, using multi-media sources and presents useful references for further study. After the main modules there are short quizzes allowing learners to test their knowledge.

It should be emphasised that the T-GUIDE eLearning course does not qualify a learner to work as a specialised tourist guide. This requires professional training as a tourist guide and an additional special training course.

T-GUIDE Continuing Professional Development for Qualified Tourist Guides

Following the succesful completion of the T-GuIDE project, since 2016 FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations in partnership with ENAT, offers specialist training courses for professional tourist guides in guiding people with intellectual disabilities.

The first “T-GUIDE” training course was held for London Blue Badge tourist guides in March 2016, in the Houses of Parliament in London, UK.

Fifth International Congress Tourism for All

23-25 September 2015, Madrid, Spain. For anyone interested in Accessible Tourism for All, this will be the top event of 2015 in Europe where researchers, policymakers and practitioners will present, learn about, discuss and plan new initiatives in this flourishing field of tourism development.

The fifth edition of the "Tourism for All" international congress will be held jointly with the Sixth edition of the "International Congress on Design, Research Networks and Technology for All (DRT4ALL)", organised by the ONCE Foundation in collaboration with UNWTO and ENAT, with the support of Vodafone Foundation, Spain.

Background

The ONCE Foundation has worked since its inception to contribute to the full social inclusion of people with disabilities, giving effect to the principle of equal opportunity and nondiscrimination.

Within this context, the ONCE Foundation has decided to organize the V International Congress on Tourism for All and the VI International Congress of Design, Technology and Research Networks for All in order to join forces and leverage the synergies that can be generated from both Congresses. Joint plenary sessions will be held as well as specific roundtables and workshops for each Congress.

This V International Congress on Tourism for All has as its central focus New Technologies and Tourism for all; Solutions and Technology Applications in Tourism for All.

Conference Topics

The T-GuIDE initiative addresses two of today’s major societal challenges in Europe: to increase opportunities in the job market and to increase social inclusion.

The aim is to produce an EU training model and Manual for training Tourist Guides in guiding people who have learning difficulties or other intellectual impairments.

Background

The EU is fighting increasing unemployment and the related strain on social inclusion as a consequence of the global financial crisis. The tourism industry, while showing signs of resiliance in some areas, is threatened by lower turnover and consequent threats to investment in training and innovation.

Many tourism destinations and businesses recognise that they must diversify and increase the quality of their products in order to reach new and wider markets. A re-orientation of the tourism sector is taking place with a focus on ”Accessible Tourism for All”, which aims to deliver safe, comfortable and enjoyable tourism experiences for the entire tourism market, including people with disabilities, seniors and others with specific access requirements. Here, tourism providers in all parts of the tourism service chain need targeted training to develop their skills, so that they can meet the particular needs of guests with learning difficulties or intellectual disabilities.

The main aim of T-GuIDE is to initiate an EU-wide discussion on tourist guiding for intellectually disabled and to build a common guide for training professional Tourist Guides, in terms of common principles, methodologies and recommendations to work on social inclusion, skills implementation and new job opportunities.

The Idea

To give Tourist Guides an awareness of the requirements of persons with learning difficulties and intellectual impairments and to equip them with the skills to extend their guiding work to these groups of visitors, thus extending the offer of the tourism sector in Europe to a wider range of customers market;
To promote the integration of people with intellectual and learning difficulties in Europe by enabling them to enjoy tourism experiences by gaining a greater appreciation of the cultural heritage of Europe;
To enhance the role of the third sector - especially organisations of people with disabilities and their familes – in developing learning programmes and tools for professionals in the tourism industry, in order to enable the delivery of higher quality tourism products which meet the needs of all customers, including those with disabilties.

On behalf of the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (FEG), one of the nine partners in the T-GuiDE project, the Executive Officer & FEG European Tourist Guide Trainer, Efi Kalamboukidou notes: "The T-GuiDE project is a great opportunity for us, the qualified tourist guides across Europe, to develop new skills in guiding people with intellectual disability and learning difficulties to the cultural and natural heritage of the countries we are qualified to guide in. It is always a challenge to try something new in our work as guides, to explore more fields of employment and innovation and at the same time to follow the guidelines of the established CEN European Standard EN15565:2008 for the training of tourist guides in Europe. I'm certain it will be a very interesting and fruitful project co-operation, as many esteemed partners are involved in it".

Carolin Gosch, of Lebenshilfe GUV, Austria, another partner adds: “The Lebenshilfe GUV has been working for many years on the aim to support people with intellectual disabilities in participating in social life. Inclusion means for us that people with intellectual disabilities can also participate in leisure, education and culture. From our perspectives, T-GuIDE is an excellent project for the tourism sector and tourist guides to raise awareness on the needs of people with intellectual disabilities and to enable people with intellectual disabilities to participate in this interesting and exciting part of life.”

Outputs

Main T-GuIDE outputs include:

A discussion document on methodologies for tourist inclusion of intellectually disabled people;
Draft T-GuIDE Manual with good practices and methodologies for intellectually disabled;
Training of 18 tourist guides in the EU, using the Draft T-GuIDE Manual (test and refine);
An EU training model and T-GUIDE Manual (final version);
A framework of skills for training and skills assessment of “T-GuIDEs” at EU level;
A Trial of a Tourist Itinerary for visitors with intellectual disabilities/learning difficulties .

Expected impact

18 tourist guides trained from 8 EU countries;
200-300 tourist guides will pre-survey the T-GuIDE Model;
60.000 tourist guides and 2000 intellectually disabled reached by project dissemination;
200 non-governmental and business stakeholders in accessible tourism worldwide wil be informed about the project results;
10-15 intellectually disabled visitors will take part in the test version of a guided tourist itinerary trial.

Tourists: extending the economic and cultural field in Europe
Tourist Guides: developing job profiles with “New Skills for New Jobs”, as the main target
People with Intellectual and Learning Difficulties: the final beneficiaries of the training
In Europe: reaching tourism professionals in Member States of the European Union – the “political dimension”.

The Eureka! Story

A guide to Eureka,the national children's museum based in Halifax UK, for children with Autism and other conditions. (15 pages)

Children with autism and other conditions may be hyper sensitive to sensory input, and there is a lot of sensory input when visiting Eureka!

They thought that knowing what to expect would go a long way towards reducing the stress of a visit, and so they developed the Eureka! story – a practical tool for parents, teachers and children to read before visiting to familiarise themselves with what a visit may entail.

They worked with children from Cliff Hill School to develop The Eureka! Story to ensure that the experience of visiting Eureka! was captured as effectively and clearly as possible, making it a truly collaborative project.

T-Guide Conference Presents New Training Programme for Tourist Guides

The results of the EU funded Lifelong Learning project, T-GuIDE, were presented at a conference in Brussels on 31 March 2015, hosted by the Flemish Regional Government and Flemish Accessibility Agency.

The final project meeting and T-Guide Conference took place in Brussels at the end of March 2015.

Both events were generously hosted at the Flemish Government Buildings, under the auspices of the new Flemish Agency for Accessibility, Director Ms. Mieke Broeders.

Over 50 participants, including tourist guides, destination managers, public officials and tourism professionals, attended the Conference, chaired by Ms. Broeders.

The audience of tourist guides, destination managers and tourism professionals was given an overview of the new training course's components and an introduction to the subject of tourist guiding for visitors with intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties.

T-GuIDE Presents Training System for Tourist Guiding of Visitors with Intellectual Disabilities

At a conference hosted by the Flemish Regional Government, the EU-funded T-GUIDE project presented its results to over 50 tourist guides, destination managers and policy makers from 10 European countries.

Visitors with intellectual disabilities and/or learning difficulties, their families and friends encounter many difficulties when travelling.

Their experience of attractions and cultural heritage can be very limited, since few tourist guides have the knowledge and skills to guide this clientele.

The T-GUIDE project was conceived to address this problem by identifying the required competences and developing a supplementary training course for professional tourist guides.

At the conference, Carlos Ortega, President of FEG, the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, underlined the importance of the project’s results for FEG members, stating “This training should result in more guided tours for visitors in European countries and, at the same time lead to new job opportunities for tourist guides and for the tourism industry”.

Project Officer, Antonella Correra, European Commission Tourism Unit, emphasized: “Skills development is a major concern for European tourism and we will use this example to show how different sectors are tackling their Continuing Professional Development needs".

Behind the T-Guide training course is a group of nine organisations, supported by the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme, ”Leonardo Da Vinci”.

Partners include the European Network for Accessible Tourism, ENAT and the Polish University Społeczna Akademia Nauk, Lodz as, well as Austrian, Spanish Latvian, Italian and British vocational training experts, cultural institutions and NGOs.

Welcome to T-GUIDE

This website provides information about the T-GUIDE project: "Tourist Guides for People with Learning and Intellectual Difficulties in Europe".

For Tourist Guides

T-GUIDE seeks to inform professional tourist guides about the requirements of visitors with learning difficulties - children, young people and adults - and how they can be engaged and informed in a guided tour.

Experiences from practice can be shared in the "Forum" pages of the website and we welcome questions and comments from guides who are interested in contributing to the discussion.

Many tourist guides may not have considered the possibility of guiding people with learning difficulties.

Our team is here to share your concerns and develop a better understanding of what "inclusive" guiding can be and how to offer this service for visitors of all abilities.

The T-GUIDE project will create a manual and training course for professional tourist guides which will be tested in live tours. In 2015 the course will be offered to the members of FEG - the European Federation of Tourist Guides, whose expert trainers are members of the project team. Other guides will also have the opportunity to take the course

For Visitors

T-GUIDE aims to enable all visitors, regardless of an intellectual or learning difficulty, to have an enriching and meaningful tourism experience by taking part in a professionally guided tour.

We are working with families and support organisations to identify requirements and create suitable tools and methods for involving visitors with learning difficulties or other intellectual difficulties in guided tours.

In the Themes and Resources pages of this site you will find information about good practices, research studies and links to other sources of information which the project team is using to develop the T-GUIDE Manual.

Visitors may also find these resources useful. We also welcome any reference materials that families and support organisations have found helpful.

For Destinations

In order to be a truly inclusive and accessible destination, those who are responsible for tourist destination management need to be aware of the requirements of all visitors and take steps to ensure a warm welcome - and that appropriate support measures are in place to meet the needs of all visitors.

Professional tourist guides are often the "face" of a destination to the visitor, giving a personal welcome and contributing to a lasting impression of the place, its people and its cultural significance.

The T-GUIDE team, including ENAT - the European Network for Accessible Tourism - is gathering and providing information and support tools that can be useful for destination managers when creating accessible experiences for visitors, including those with learning and intellectual difficulties.

The T-GUIDE Manual will address how tourist guides can contribute to enhancing social responsibility through their daily work, helping to make the tourist destination a welcoming and inclusive place for all visitors.
